Written for the 2022 Austin Trumpet Camp, Dreamscape is comprised of three short movements that explore minimalistic ideas. The first movement is joyous in mood and utilizes upbeat syncopated rhythms. The main motivic material for this movement is intended to be its rhythmic identity rather than a melodic line.
The slower second movement is palindromic, beginning with a chant-like melody that builds to unison chord hits. A sorrowful melody is introduced next before another iteration of the chord hits, and then the sorrowful melody gets flipped upside and “corrupted” in a sense. After one final iteration of the chords, the end of the piece features the chant melody winding down to a single instrument, opposite of how it started.
The final movement is very minimalist, hitting the listener right out of the gate with fast, rapidly articulated arpeggios. The odd and even numbered parts alternate when the arpeggios begin, giving the music more energy without causing the players’ tongues to entirely fall off.
